The Basics of Water Treatments in Florida Homes

At Ideal Water Solutions in Tampa, Florida, we have been installing water treatment systems in homes throughout the central and Gulf Coast regions of Florida since 1987.

And because we partner with several major water treatment equipment companies across the country, we can deliver the best, most cost-effective, reliable solution to any water issues you may be experiencing in your home.

According to an article in the Miami Herald, “More Floridians are exposed to unsafe drinking water than just about anywhere in the country.” And while local governments and municipalities follow strict federal and state laws on monitoring water contaminants, the reality is that Florida’s drinking water still contains above-recommended amounts of contaminants and impurities that could be harmful to you and your family’s health.

In fact, Florida’s water quality ranks “among the worst in the nation,” according to a 2022 data analysis by the Environmental Integrity Project. The data analysis goes on to say that much of the contamination is “due to nutrient pollution, fertilizers, and in toxic algae blooms, manatee die-offs, and the degraded water quality of Florida rivers, waterways, and beaches.”

Water Treatment for Florida Homes

If these are not good reasons to look into a water treatment system for your Florida home, we don’t know what is. Human beings need clean water. Animals need clean water. Free from chemicals, organic matter, contaminants, and dangerous impurities. Our way of life depends on clean water. Our economy depends on it. Our lives depend on it.

So, let’s explore the basics of our water treatment processes and why they are essential for your residential property. Water treatment systems in your home are basically broken down into 5 categories. Either one or a combination of several of these processes are used to filtrate your drinking water, depending on the initial quality of the water and the number of contaminants within.

  • Disinfection methods include chlorination, ultraviolet light, use of heat, clarification or the removal of solid particles, and chemical disinfection.

  • Reverse osmosis which uses special technology to remove a large portion of the contaminants by pushing pressurized water through a semi-penetrable membrane.

  • Filtration with activated carbon filters which trap odors when molecules attach to the outside of the filter, rather than passing through it.

  • Distillation, a process where contaminated water is heated to form steam. The steam then cools and condenses to form purified water. Because inorganic impurities and large organic molecules do not evaporate with the water, they are left behind as waste to be discarded.

  • Ion exchange or water softener, removes the hard ions of magnesium and calcium, replacing them with “softer” ions like sodium.

Why is Clean Water so Important?

The human body is made up of approximately 60% water. Although the amount of water in our body changes with gender, age, and the volume of water we each consume every day, water helps us maintain the right balance of bodily fluids. As we age, the total amount of water in our body can decrease to as little as 45%.

Drinking pure, clean water can help to maintain the balance of bodily fluids that basically are the liquid “engines” that power the human body. They include maintenance of body temperature which can be so important here in Florida. Digestion and absorption of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, circulation, creation of saliva, and other important functions that keep us all alive and thriving.
